Network Drives/Shares
Go into CHOOSER
[from Apple Menu]
Click APPLESHARE
<if you logged in,
you won't need to log in again - it will give you a message that you're logged
in>
<Be
sure that you have Col of Engr selected>
Select your department
server
(EX: ENGRCE
- servers begin with ENGR and your dept abbrev.)
<a list of 'services'
will appear - the bolded items on the list are what you can connect to
with your ID>
<Check the boxes
if you want to have the network drives/shares connect automatically on
startup >
<or SHIFT/click
each network drive/share for just that login session>
<the network
drives/shares should appear on your desktop>
Go into CHOOSER
[from the Apple menu]
Click on the icon
labeled Appleshare
<Col of Engr should be the Zone>
<Arrow down in the
file server area on right side of window until you see drive/share that you
want
(EX: ENGRCE)>
Click to select your
department server
Click [OK]
SHIFT/click with your mouse to select the network
drives/services that you can access (bolded items)
Drag network
drive/share icon to trash
<this disconnects the drive>
Permanent Personal Drive (The name of this Drive would be your User ID - EX: JADESM)
This 'personal permanent' drive is a drive at the network level
where you can store files
(just as you use your hard drive locally - files on this
personal drive get backed up regularly)
Common "Department" Drive - (ex: ESMCOMM) - everyone in the dept. can get to this drive
Use this drive to copy files within department - all network users within your department can access this drive
General Info Drive (Software applications available, etc.) (Name: : CDC PROVIDED APPLICATIONS)
Transfer Drive (Name: TRANSFER)
(use this drive to copy or
transfer files across departments
This drive is and OPEN and UNSECURE
area
Files may be purged periodically
from this drive
Do NOT keep sensitive files in this
area (consider sending a file attachment via email instead)
NETWORK ACCOUNT USER ID
Most Network User ID's are made up of the:
User's Initials +
Dept Abbreviation
EX: John R. Doe - Dean's Office
USERID = JRDDO
OR
You now have the option of selecting your own ID to use on login
EX: John R. Doe - Dean's Office
USERID = JDoe
MAIL ACCOUNT (Optional)
If you get a mail account to use the College's Mail Server (in addition to getting a network account), you'll use the same user ID assigned for your network account - your email address will be:
your-user-id@engr.psu.edu
EX: JRDDO@engr.psu.edu
Note : Passwords will expire every 180 days; you may use alphanumeric characters, but cannot use dictionary words. Your password must be at least 6 characters but no longer than 8, you cannot use the same password twice-a password history file is kept.
You can find this information for all
systems at the following URL:
http://www.engr.psu.edu/www/spt/
http://www.engr.psu.edu/www/spt/changing.htm
The domain is made up of
many NT servers that are located in departments throughout the College.
Ex: ENGRCE [Civil Engineering's server]
ENGRESM [Engineering
Science & Mechanics]
etc.
Remember: When you shut down
your MAC and startup again, your last printer setting will
return.
If the 'TRANSFER'
drive icon is not on your desktop, do the following:
Doubleclick on Transfer
Create a folder on Transfer and copy files into the folder
This is to be used to copy files for access to other departments
Let the other person know where the file is located
Shared drives can be set up upon request where only authorized users can be identified to access (EX: If you wanted to set up a drive/share so that a dept database could be stored and accessed on a network drive by more than one person--this is secure and no one else would be able to access) (Ex: ESMADMIN)
