Email

The College operates faculty and staff email services via redundant Exchange servers running Exchange 2007 services.

College Email Features

  • All incoming mail is scanned for viruses before being delivered to the recipient mailbox, thereby greatly reducing the risk of our users' personal PCs being infected.

  • All incoming messages are run through a spam scanning engine. Messages identified as having a high probability of being spam are identified by placing "*** SPAM ***" at the beginning of the subject line.

  • Daily backups of the message stores are performed.

  • A standard individual mailbox quota size of 1 Gigabyte.

  • A message tombstone setting on the server allows deleted messages to be recovered for up to 14 days.  This gives the user the ability to restore messages that were removed from folders or emptied from the deleted items folder.

  • Unified messaging integrates the power of the telephone and the users email account.  It allows a user to listen to voicemail with their email client, or listen to their text mail over the phone via a text to speech generator.  Users can even use a telephone to send voice responses to text email messages.

Supported Protocols

Mail service is provided via POP, IMAP, Exchange, and secure Webmail.

Email Clients

Outlook is the recommended mail client for Windows and Entourage is the recommended client for Macintosh. While many other email clients may also function well, Outlook and Entourage are the only clients fully supported by ECS.

Portable Devices

Currently supported portable devices are Windows Mobile (5 or 6) devices and Apple iPhones. Blackberries and Palm devices are NOT supported.

Account Eligibility

All faculty and staff are eligible for a College of Engineering email account.   Each mail account must also have a corresponding PSU_ENGINEERING domain account.  Graduate students that demonstrate a need to interact with faculty in the areas of Exchange based shared calendaring, mailboxes, tasks or folders may also be eligible.  Undergraduate students who work with student organizations that have mailboxes on the College mail server may also be eligible.

Account Duration

College of Engineering email accounts continue to be available to the above users for the duration of their active employment within the College of Engineering.   Within one week of termination or retirement the user may request their email be forwarded to another account.  For staff in good standing the email forwarding will remain in effect for one month.  For faculty in good standing the email forwarding will remain in effect for one year.  The exception to this rule are emeritus faculty who may upon request maintain their PSU_ENGINEERING account and corresponding email account indefinitely.
